Nancy Dawn Ashway

Nancy Dawn Ashway started riding in Harrisburg, PA, at the age of 10, then buying her first horse at 12, she continued her riding education by training with “A” show judges, Vince Dugan, Mary Wade Warner and Sally Dohner. Focusing on hunters and hunt seat equitation, she enjoyed competing in the USEF Medal finals in Harrisburg, PA, and also competing in the Jr Hunters at shows such as Devon, Washington, and Harrisburg in the late 60’s. As a Jr rider she also showed in the Jr Jumpers on her equitation horse. In addition to showing, she also enjoyed foxhunting through her high school and college years. Moving to VA, after high school graduation, she continued her education at Southern Seminary Jr College for Women in 1972, and then continued on to James Madison University, where she was one of the first intercollegiate riders in 1973. She continued showing on the “A” circuit in the Amateur Owner division in VA.  After college she moved to Talbot County, MD, and worked for several veterinarians in the area, acquiring a lot of practical knowledge for the care of animals. She started teaching riders and training young horses in 1973 at various farms in the Talbot County area. In 1977 her family invested in building Country Comfort Farm and it has continued ever since. She managed both schooling shows and MHSA shows at the farm for over 18 years. The farm was the home base of the “Talbot County Special Riders” which was started in the early 80’s, and had numerous weeks of summer camps for children and adults.

Some of her accomplishments as a trainer, has been having students winning the VHSA Horse Medal Finals, winning ribbons at the Gittings Finals, Ariat Finals, MHSA Horse Medal Finals, MHSA Pony Medal Finals, Marshall Sterling Finals, USEF Pony Finals, VHSA Pony Medal Finals, and the USEF Zone Finals. She also has had numerous riders qualify and attend the Washington International Local Day finals in DC.

Ms Ashway has not only pursued her teaching career, but also her judging career as well, and has had her USEF license since the early 80’s. She now has her “R”, which qualifies her to judge at all levels around the country. She has judged prestigious shows such as HITS NY, HITS Culpeper, VA, HITS Ocala, FL, HITS Palm Springs, CA, Swan Lake, PA, Garden State, NJ, Zone Intercollegiate Finals, and numerous unrated shows as well.

She also enjoys giving clinics to outside clients, traveling to other facilities, focusing on what the judge is looking for at a horse show. She has given numerous clinics “From the judges point of view” for associations such as MSA Show Circuit and the CPJHSA Show Circuit.
